Carterton Youth Council in the local media

Bronwyn Peatman, 12, the chairman of the town’s youth council, spoke with other members at this month’s Carterton Parish Council meeting.

Bronwyn, a pupil at Carterton Community College, says the Allandale Youth Centre, in Burford Road, should be saved.

Bronwyn, of Arkell Gardens, Carterton, said: “It keeps people off the streets and it makes sure there is a warm place to go.

“A lot of the members of our youth council attend the youth centre and we all decided that we would try to keep it from closing down.”

Bronwyn, who has been chairman of the youth council since September, said the centre also provided a place of stability for young people at Brize Norton RAF base. Read the full story in the Witney Gazette.

CYC elections - Autumn 2009

In September, Youth organisations across the town were asked to elect their Youth Councillors for 2009 - 2010. The Youth Council now has representation from each of the 5 year groups at the Community College, each of the 5 primary schools, the Allandale youth centre, Carterton Football Club and several other organisations catering for the young people of our town.

Youth Councillors were invited to an ice-breaker session where they took part in team building and leadership exercises. The calibre of the individuals leads me to believe that we are going to have a very interesting and successful year.

At the first official meeting in October the election of Officers took place, the result was as follows:

Chair - Bronwyn Peatman    Vice Chair - Emma Beckett    Secretary - Lauren Sanderson    Treasurer - Matt O'Brien

Well done to all.

CYC End of year celebration

On Friday 24th July 2009 some of the Youth Councillors gathered at the Allandale Youth Centre to celebrate an incredibly successful year. It was an ideal opportunity to reflect on what has been a very busy year during which the CYC have raised well over £500 for their chosen charity – CLIC Sargent. As well as this amazing fund raising we have also seen other successes this year including sponsoring the new Carterton pump track, part funding the Carterton race team and raising the profile of young people in Carterton.

Friday was all about having fun and for me it was also an opportunity to get thrashed by Tom Harvey at table tennis, Matty Yallop on the air hockey table and Rosie Herridge on the table football table. Matty and I would like to extend a very warm thank you to Madam Mayor, Tina Cockroft, Lin Kennedy and Mandy Williams for making the celebration so much fun.

Oxfordshire Playbus - Sports sessions

Oxfordshire Playbus would like to offer Carterton the opportunity to introduce new sports to young people. They have funding to run one 2.5 hr session each week starting 21 July at 11 a.m. for no cost to any young people who want to take part. This summer they are able to offer a five-week skater hockey program. They are taking bookings for summer sessions now. Each activity runs for half a day. For more information contact Dave Edwards on 07590 229109 or email: dave@oxfordshirehockey.com.

Play Ranger sessions in Carterton - Summer 2009

The Play Ranger project works in parks and outdoor play environments across West Oxfordshire. The project operates on an ‘open access’ basis, meaning that children and young people choose to be involved and are free to come and go as they please. There is no registration required.

The Play Rangers do their utmost to ensure children and young people are kept safe yet provide play opportunities for them to take risk, be challenged, build their confidence and self esteem, and have a say in what happens within the session. The aim is to have fun outdoors come rain or shine.

It must be noted that the nature of this work means that children are responsible for their own actions. The sessions are aimed at 5 -16 year olds but children who are younger than 5 may attend as long as parent/carer supervision is available.

The Play Rangers will run 5 morning sessions at Alvescot Road Recreation Ground in Carterton from 10am to 12.30pm from week commencing Monday 20th July. The sessions will run on a Wednesdays morning with Helen Morrison and Rita Lewis at Alvescot Road Recreation Ground on the following dates; 22nd July, 29th July, 5th August, 12th August, 19th August.
